The President of Mexico and the Commissioner of Major Leagues could meet soon.
With the upcoming construction of 10 Baseball Academies in Mexico and the official major league series in this country, the meeting between Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Rob Manfred could take place at any time.
The former former Major League Baseball second baseman, Edgar Gonzalez – Director of the Office of the President for the Promotion and Development of Baseball in Mexico -, has commented privately in his visits to the states about the possible meeting between Lopez Obrador and Manfred.
On August 20, Manfred referred to López Obrador as “our current favorite politician.”
In an interview with ESPN, the executive said that they greatly appreciate the president’s commitment to baseball and they will seek to work with AMLO to bring more Mexican players to the big leagues.
For this year there will be three MLB series in Monterrey – two official in April and May – but Jalisco and Mexico City also intend to celebrate doing so in 2020 and 2021.
The first series this year will be in March at the Sultan Palace between the Colorado Rockies and the Arizona Dbacks, although they’re pre-season games.
The project from the Presidency of Mexico is already outlined.
There are 10 states that will have Baseball Academies and in fact already took the facilities of the Academy in Sinaloa that was initially operated by the Government of that entity, first with Mario López Valdez and then with Quirino Ordaz Coppel.
Officially the Academies will be installed in the following states:
- Baja California
- Mexico City
